THE LIFE IN TIGER TANK

This situation had predictable consequences. Despite the use of burners which were intended for heating the coolant and thawing of the drive wheels, but in reality was also used for cabin heating, the moisture from our breathing soon froze and turned into a thick white ice build-up. If any of the crew fell asleep and leaning his head against the wall of the tank, the hair was actually frozen to her when he woke up. To a certain extent we could warm up, cowering and trembling.Marines in their positions hardly envied us. Our movement in the tank were limited, and we didn’t have the opportunity to warm up by the stove"

The military life sitting in a bunker, was much easier the lives of tankers, particularly those that participated in the fighting on the Eastern front. A large number of people suffered from frostbite, many had to amputate the limb. Because of difficulties with sleep in cold nights the crew was so tired from lack of sleep, especially during long operations. Fatigue was the cause of a lack of attention, which in turn could lead to dangerous situations and even death.

To avoid such situations, the crew was given a drug called “pervitin” synthetic drug methamphetamine, which is highly addictive due to which the people could not sleep for days. In the report of the 503rd heavy tank battalion from
December 1943 referred to this fact: “During the deployment of the battalion had a day to put an attack, and at night to be in the shelter. We realized that for people to not sleep at night, they need to deliver medical supplies”. Life in a tank “Tiger” was definitely not pleasant.
